Fionnuala Quin — Seaweed Bioplastic Innovator & Founder, Kelpy
About fionnuala
Fionnuala (or Fin like a dolphin) is a purpose driven founder intent on creating a more equitable world and regenerating our planet. Her dedication to ocean innovation stems from a childhood raised in a fishing community in Western Australia. She witnessed first-hand the decline of marine species from over-fishing and the demise of the commercial fishing industry in her hometown.
After 20 years in business development, program delivery and community development, Fin and her family relocated to Jervis Bay NSW in 2020. The local community was suffering from the aftermath of the Black Summer fires and Covid lockdowns with their local economies in tatters. Coupled with the world’s escalating climate crisis, plastic epidemic and political instability, Fionnuala decided a bold effort was required to inspire hope for the next generation, including her four daughters.
She founded Kelpy in 2021 and now has a global team and network of seaweed and sustainable material experts. Kelpy developed a world first polymer innovation made from seaweed. The Kelpy pellet is capable of replacing plastics on standard manufacturing equipment and returns safely to nature, with a sea-to-soil journey. As a systems thinker with a passion for female empowerment, Fin developed an ethical and sustainable supply and manufacture model to bring uplift to the poorest nations. With localised production and fair trade seaweed, Kelpy is positioned to grow locally and scale globally worldwide.
